The clouds that began to move in towards the end of our Red Cones hike looked promising so we went out for sunset. I had fond memories of Dunderberg Meadows and the colorful Aspen trees there. I was hoping to be able to combine them with a colorful sunset!

Red Cones (5 photos)
The Red Cones are a volcanic landscape feature near Mammoth Lakes, more or less along the John Muir and Pacific Crest Trail. We hiked there from Horseshoe Lake via McLeod Lake after a brief stop at the Twin Lakes Overlook and Lake Mamie.
Back to 20 Lakes Basin (13 photos)
We finally returned to hike the beautiful 20 Lakes Basin again (we’ve been there before, in 2012).
Rush Creek Trail (4 photos)
After our morning visit to McLeod Lake (previous post) we drove to June Lake in the afternoon, to see how the fall colors in this lovely area were progressing.
Morning at McLeod Lake (3 photos)
Our first excursion during our week in the Eastern Sierra was to McLeod Lake, which lies just 1 mile above Horseshoe Lake. The unusual elevation as well as the cool and very dry air were taking a toll and we didn’t venture much further than the lake itself.
Night at Lake Mamie
We’re back from a week-long visit to the Eastern Sierra where we did some hiking and day trips based out of Mammoth Lakes. On the evening of our arrival we had an early dinner and then took a walk with Toni at Horseshoe Lake. The sun was setting and we could easily wait for the stars to come out. At Lake Mamie, it was especially nice to see the stars and Milky Way reflect in the calm water.
